Antonio Aparicio ( Apa)

Conocí a Antonio a través de Luis Arias, quién trabajaba para Sybilla. Nacido en Alicante, había estudiado en la Escola Massana ..y buscaba trabajo.Desde el primer momento sintonizamos. Nos entendíamos extraordinariamente bien. En los cinco años que trabajamos juntos jamás tuvimos ni siquiera una discusión seria.Teníamos un gusto y una sensibilidad muy parecidos. Apa admiraba a Juan Gatti ( y quién no ?).Sus propuestas eran siempre minimalistas en lo gráfico. Jugaba a la papiroflexia, investigaba con telas, papeles muy especiales, encuadernaciones manuales a menudo complejas...Juntos fuimos un equipo maravilloso. También fuimos muy amigos.Ganamos varios premios Laus.
Apa murió el día de San Isidro del 94. Unos meses antes cayó enfermo. Tenía 30 años.
Su muerte me rompió. No quise seguir sin él, cerré el estudio.

I met Apa through Luis Arias, who worked for Sybilla. He was from Alicante, had studied Graphic design at Escola Massana and was looking for work. Right from the start we understood each other famously. In the five years we worked together, we did not have even one serious argument. We had very similar taste . he admired Juan Gatti ( who does not ? ). His proposals were always minimalistic, playing mainlly with special papers, textures,manual finishes. We were a wonderful team ,as well as close friends. We won several Laus prizes.
Apa died on the 15th of May 1994. Several months earlier he developped a seriuos illness. His death tore me apart. I did not want to go on without him. I closed the studio.

The girl next door (??) ..o algo más natural

Esta vez el intento era crear una imagen que acercara la ropa de Josep Font y Luz Díaz a la mujer ( joven) de la calle..o sea, algo más sencillo y natural.
La sesión , siempre con Joseph Hunwick y Jorge de la Garza, la hicimos en la playa.
Antonio Aparicio ( mi socio / amigo/ diseñador ) diseñó un catálogo desplegable.
Es sobre todo memorable el vestido de la página central...ilustra lo mejor del estilo de Josep y Luz en estos tiempos.

This time we were after a more natural image,trying to make Josep and Luz´s clothes more understandable by women anywhere. We shot on the beach, always with Joseph Hunwick and Jorge de la Garza. Antonio Aparicio ( my partner/ friend/ graphic designer) created a " folded" catalogue. The dress on its center fold is specially memorable. It illustrates the best of Josep and Luz on those days.

Una Historia de Santas .. A Saint´s story

Sigo con Josep Font y Luz Díaz...y no por afán de ser exhaustiva, si no por que creo que tiene cierto interés el ver la evolución, tanto en su estilo como en el trabajo de imagen que desarrollamos desde el estudio, siempre con Joseph Hunwick y Jorge de la Garza.
En esta ocasión ( y me he liádo, esto es tres temporadas anterior a mi última entrada ) la inspiración eran las místicas cristianas de la edad media. Las Santas.
Esta vez no hubo posibilidad de catálogo, por lo que realizamos una carpeta de prensa manual que incluía originales de estas dos fotos.

Still with Josep Font and Luz Díaz... because I think there is a certain historical interest in seeing both the development of their early style and the image work we did from the studio, always with Joseph Hunwick and Jorge de la Garza. These pictures are actually from 3 seasons before the ones from my last entry. In this case , the inspiration was the early christian mystics , the saints. This time we were not able to produce a catalogue , but we made ( manually) a press-kit that contained originals of these pictures.

The accompanying ( very poetic)text was writen by Joana Bonet.

Contando un cuento ( de hadas) Telling a fairytale

Siempre me ha importado ( y esto lo aprendí con María Casanovas) el explicar algo con las fotos.

Que tengan cierto cariz cinemátográfico, que cuenten una historia.

( suelo incluso dibujar un story- board)

La historia suele venir del cruce de la inspiración del diseñador y de lo que yo interpreto.

En este caso, una historia de hadas.

Las fotos las hice yo ( sigue siendo para Josep Font y Luz Díaz).Creo que incluso me ocupé también del pelo y el maquillaje .

La modelo es Lydia Zimmermann, gran amiga( ahora directora de cine) sus hijos y también aparecía mi hijo Pablo . Me asistió Mark Rogers.

I have always cared ( and this is something I learned from María Casanovas) about explaining something throughout the photos. To give them a certain cinematographic air, to aim at telling a story. ( I usually draw a story- board). The story is born out of my conversations with the designers and my own interpretation.

In this case, it was a fairy tale.

I took these pictures myself and I think I also did the hair and make-up. The model is Lydia Zimmermann ( great friend, she is now a film director), her boys and my son Pablo also appeared in the photographs.I had Mark Rogers assisting me.

En Montserrat - In Montserrat

Montserrat es la montaña sagrada de Cataluña, pero también en círculos New Age se considera un lugar de poder, con fuerte energía telúrica. En cualquier caso, nos fascinaba y allí fuimos, montaña arriba con todo el equipo a hacer una vez más fotos de imagen para Josep Font y Luz Díaz. Ellos tenían un productor nuevo. Las sedas eran maravillosas y la colección era un tanto más realista , sin perder nada con ello.

Montserrat is Catalonia´s sacred mountain , but is also considered in New Age circles to be a power spot: one of those places around the world with a specially strong teluric energy. In any case, we were fascinated by it and we happily trekked up the mountain , once more in order to shoot Josep Font y Luz Diaz image catalogue. They had a new producer . The silks were wonderful and the colection was a bit more wearable, not losing anything in the process.

Palo Alto

Palo Alto es una antigua fábricadel Poble Nou re-habitada por artistas varios. Fuimos de los primeros en llegar. Joseph Hunwick alquiló este espacio. Eran dos naves, una de ellas con techo transparente era el estudio de luz natural. La otra, taller dónde se creaban nuestros fondos y escenografías , sala de maquillaje y estilismo.

Pero también , ya de noche ,fue el escenario de muchas largas, lindas fiestas...

Palo Alto is an old reclaimed factory in Poble Nou ( Barcelona), that has been converted into artists´studios. We were among the first to arrive . Joseph Hunwick rented this space. There were two very big empty lofts. One of them we turned into a daylight studio and the other was partly workshop, where we created our own backdrops and scenarios , and also make- up and styling space.

But also, at night, it was the setting for some memorable parties..
